Mission
To bring together businesswomen of diverse occupations and to provide opportunities for them to help themselves and others grow personally and professionally through leadership, education, networking support and national recognition.
History
Motor City Charter Chapter was chartered June 2, 1963 in Detroit, Michigan when thirty-eight women in business, including the first chapter president, Mrs. Lucille Forth, accepted the Association’s Hand of Friendship and gave birth to a new chapter.
Our Board of Directors consists of President, Vice-President, Recording Secretary, Corresponding Secretary, Treasurer, and Immediate Past President.
The chapter is part of ABWA’s District V in the Great Lakes Region. It has been a
member of the ABWA Metro-Detroit Area Council since the Council’s formation in 1991.
Through its fund-raising activities, Motor City Charter Chapter has dedicated 42 years to women’s education in the form of local chapter scholarships and SBMEF grants and
interest free loans.

The chapter also has to its credit, the formation of six new Detroit area chapters of the American Business Women’s Association. They are:

- Grosse Pointe Charter Chapter, July 21, 1982
- Spirit of Detroit Chapter, July 25, 1985
- Reflection of Detroit Chapter, August 4, 1992
- Motor City Charter Chapter is proud to have sponsored two members who were elected to National Office as District V Vice President—Essie Rodgers, 1997-1998 and Shirley Myrick. Shirley Myrick was also elected National Secretary-Treasurer, 2004-2005 and is presently National President for 2005-2006.
